NIYA Infiltrates Florida Detention Center to Prove Fraud of Obama Immigration Policy
Now demands full review of facility, jail organizing inside to continue

MIAMI—The National Immigrant Youth Alliance will hold a press conference today outside the office of Senator Marco Rubio to discuss our internal review of Broward Detention Center in Broward, Florida. Over the course of the last month, 7 undocumented NIYA organizers have intentionally placed themselves into deportation proceedings in an effort to enter the Broward Detention Center to organize with detainees who, according to the Obama administration, should no longer be facing deportation.

Petition: http://action.dreamactivist.org/btc/

WHEN:                 12:00 pm NOON EST

WHERE:              Office of Sen. Marco Rubio (8669 NW 36th Street, Doral, FL 33166)
WHO:                    National Immigrant Youth Alliance, undocumented youth and families with loved ones inside the Detention Center.

Since June 17, 2011, the Obama Administration has insisted that it has been using discretion in deportation cases which can be considered “low-priority,” or cause undue hardship for citizen family members. In June of this year, Obama announced extending deferred action to undocumented youth after we occupied his campaign offices for two weeks, costing his campaign thousands of hours of staff time. To date only 1.9% of such cases have actually been dropped. Our internal review is in line with these national averages.

In order to challenge Immigration and Customs Enforcement and GEO Group, Inc. which owns the facility, we have placed multiple NIYA members inside Broward Transitional Center to find people who are eligible for deferred action, are low-priority cases. In this one facility alone, we have found over 100 cases of people who, according to the Obama policies of the past year, should be released back to their families.

According to the information given to us by the organizers inside, there are:

  • people inside Broward who have pending application for a U Visa;
  • More than a dozen DREAM Act eligible youth;
  • Over 60 individuals with no criminal record or prior deportations, some detained as passengers in vehicles;
  • More than 3-dozen cases in which individuals are still eligible for discretion despite previous contacts with the system;
  • Several cases of immigrants in need of immediate medical care, including one individual with a blood clot in his leg and another with a bullet in the spine;

Organizers within the center include Viridiana Martinez, a NIYA member from North Carolina and well-known activist in the state. Viridiana was detained a little over a week ago. Claudio Rojas, father of two, was detained in 2010 after his son was stopped at a port checkpoint, the same checkpoint Viridiana Martinez allowed herself to be detained. Claudio has been fighting his own deportation to Argentina for over three years and has recently launched into a religious fast until he and others are released. Claudio, just like Viridiana and the other organizers within this facility are low-priority deportations and, according to President Obama, they should be dropped.

In accordance with the June 17th, 2011, memorandum issued by the Obama Administration, we now demand a full and complete review of each detainee at the Broward Detention center and ask that all low-priority detainees immediately be released and their cases administratively closed.

NIYA will no longer allow GEO Group or other private prison corporations to profit off of shattered families and broken lives. We will continue to organize inside their jails until the president lives up to his promises. Case summaries along with the national petition can be found online at http://action.dreamactivist.org/btc

    I think it’s great that you guys are organizing and bringing this to light, but as we approach the November election, I can’t help but think that Obama and his administration are at capacity with the campaign and won’t be able to devote the attention and time you deserve.  Is there anyone else you can target?  Who is enforcing the standards in the facility and who holds them accountable when things are not up to par?

      How about targeting your home country and make a change there?

      I read recently where Carlos “Slim” Hulu, the richest man in the world…who is Mexican, was giving a speech at one of the ivy league colleges. The Mexican students were reportly boycotting his speech. I said to myself, wow, this is great!!! They are hitting back. The richest man in the world is notorious for not being philanthropic. Imagine what Mexico would be like if he would be the Bill Gates of Mexico? After all, illegal aliens remittances sent to Mexico constitute #2 in their nations’ imports!!!! Yet they still get no respect.

      Now here is the killer! Carlos controls most of the communication business, and the Mexican students were BOYCOTTING HIM BECAUSE OF THE COST OF THE CELL PHONES CHARGES, ETC.!!!! NOT FOR INJUSTICES!!!

      Go home, there’s plenty of work for you to do! We have our own to take care of! Thanks, but no thanks! We will take care of Obama within about 100 days! We will rescend this “policy change!”

      • George McClancy, Jr.

        Please see my response to your previous post.

        Also, from what section of Mexican society do students studying at expense American universities come?  Know how you can tell?  Consider what they are complaining about.

        • amuncat

          Thank you so much for responding to my post! It’s as though talking through a glass wall, which is scary.

          They are so focused on themselves…which we have nurtured, that they have completely ignored the rest of us, their impact, their cost, and the fairness to others who have done things the right way!

          I am not some racist bigotted kook, this makes no sense!!!

  • Persephone

    I whole-heartedly agree with the sentiment of this piece that what’s going on is wrong and needs to change, and I think the idea of infiltration and organization from within is amazing. But I think it’s disingenuous to pin this on the president, and naive to to think that all he needs to do is wave a magic wand to fix it. Justin quoted the president below, but there’s a difference between doing more than one thing at a time and being expected to do everything for everyone. It seems clear that the “fraud” is not Obama’s immigration policy, but the lack of enforcement of said policy, the people at the local level, on the ground, actually tasked with following the law, who are not doing so. Those are the people that need to be identified and held accountable.

      Where does the buck stop? Does the buck stop at the oval office or not? It is well within the president’s authority

      • amuncat

        At what point do illegal aliens accept responsibility for their actions?!!! It seems that at every turn you complain and want more!
        @33e454817e2b1ed81b8838fe72951803:disqus
        You demand that we educate you kids at taxpayer’s expense. We did that and more, we fed them, taught them English, gave social services, etc. Then you asked for us to waive tuition so they could go to college. Now remember, they are still illegal aliens, and the parents who caused all of this wait quietly in the wings for the the benefits.

        WE OWE YOU NOTHING!!! YOU HAVE NOT RIGHTS HERE OTHER THAN HUMAN RIGHTS!!!!  As a matter of fact, since you are capable of inflitrating, why don’t you infiltrate your countries’ government and take down your oppressors instead of demonstrating and calling us racist when we say we are againt illegal aliens and illegal immigration?!!!

        • George McClancy, Jr.

          Our founding documents claim that humans are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights, not because they are Americans but because they are human beings.  All of the rights which our democracy provides its citizens are based on rights that we consider to be “human rights,” and our attempts to spread systems of democracy like ours throughout the world is based on the notion that all humans deserve a democratic government because they ARE humans.

          • amuncat

            Agreed, all humans deserve a democratic government…if they so choose.

            However, this invites others to create their own! Why not, instead of seeking it from other countries? Americans fought and created their own republic.  For others to come here and demand their “rights,” when they don’t do anything about it in their home country is disingenious!

          • George McClancy, Jr.

            Consider all the waves of immigrants that have come to this country, after it was already founded, in search of freedom from oppressive poverty and various forms of tyranny and persecution which they suffered in their own native country and which they were powerless to change.

            Consider also the hypocrisy of those who complain about such unfortunates, for political reasons, and also exploit their situation for cheap labor (from personal lawn care to corporate store cleaning {Walmart}..

          • amuncat

            And?!!! In the past, those who have come here have attempted to come here through our front door, not back! When they have, they have done their best to assimilate. They didn’t demand their rights after having received every accommodation.

            I think of blacks during the Civil Rights Movement. They were oppressed and brutalized. Did they migrate to Canada or Mexico? NO! They stood and fought and changed it!!!

            In Mexico today, you have the largest mass protest of the people, this is what should be done to effect change. Those who are here are the cowards…on both sides!

      • George McClancy, Jr.

        The accusations of “disingenuous” and “naive” were leveled at you, not “the brave youth.”  Notice also that the terms carry different meanings, one of which carries the blame of dishonesty, as though you were an “operative” of Obama”s political enemies, while the other suggests you might be an unwary tool of the same group.  The righteous tone of your response could be found under either condition, but the Rubio association suggests the former.  Have you tried to contact the White House before publishing this damaging broadside, in order to provide them the opportunity to explain or defend?

  • amuncat

    Sorry, I am one who believes that the whole thing has gotten completely out of hand. The president was out of place to cherry pick our immiigration laws. He is the president, he is suppose to enforce our laws. The parents have now reaped the benefits of their lawlessness! He wants illegal aliens proponents to vote for him. The sad part is that the rest of us won’t vote for him because of this!

    What are we going to do when the next hoard comes over? Giving over a million people green cards for jobs in an unprecedented unemployment situation where there are over 20million Americans unemployed…and UNDER employed, makes no sense what so ever!!!

    Don’t say that Americans are lazy and that there are jobs out there! Our jobs have been outsourced! When a person leaves a job, they don’t replace them, they add their duties on to others. People are now working 2 & 3 parttime jobs just to make ends meet. Recent college grads are having to work fast food and live at home because the professional jobs that they trained for no longer exist…and they are burdened with student loans.

    Most of you probably won’t like this, and probably don’t think beyond “getting yours,” but there is nothing to get anymore. You think you are better than Americans because you say we are lazy and that you are smarter and that you work harder. Think about it, it your people are so great, why are you here? You come here to take advantage of the greatness that we “lazy” people created before you came.

    Trust me, illegal aliens, the back lash is just around the corner, and it ain’t gonna be pretty!
    @33e454817e2b1ed81b8838fe72951803:disqus
    P.S., Our immigration laws are not broken, they are pretty typical of most countries. The problem is that greedy, lawless people don’t want to respect us, they want it fast and on their terms. We have repeatedly said NO on the Dream Act, yet,  illegal aliens feel that is wrong until they get a yes…well, NO!!!

    • KARMA

      The thing that is so great about the internet is that ANYONE can use it. Especially single-minded Americans that like to complain about illegal aliens and the dream act. That is your right, the right to freedom of speech. Your very good at putting it to good use i applaud you sir. However, while you sit at your computer at home I will be out there in the real world making a difference helping DREAMERS who through no free will of their own were brought here by parents. Everyone has an opinion but that doesn’t make yours any more justifiable than mine.

      • amuncat

        I didn’t say that your opiinion is to be valued over mine! I am, however, suggesting that you look at things beyond your movement. Do you really think that Americans think it okay for our president to put at leat another million people in our job force when, in fact, our jobs are disappearing and unemployment is really in the double digits?

        Do you imagine how we feel when we have educated you, taught you English, fed you, and provided you with medical services free, from K-12?!
        Dreamers have NEVER acknowledged the generosity of Americans, least of all saying thank you! Your parents, who benefit from the whole thing have never acknowledged what we have done for them, even though they should not be here!  At what point do you stop and say, thank you America?!!!

        Yet,, in these times of our economic downfall, you guys are always asking for more without consideration of others in America. It’s as though you are blind to your impact on others,  what you are leaving in your wake!

        Ever heard of the term backlash? Americans are VERY angry about this!!!

        P.S., You say “single minded”? Hah! Dreamers are obcessed!

        • George McClancy, Jr.

          Please see my replies to two of your previous posts.

          • amuncat

            I have. You don’t respond to the issues that it cite, you just give the usual liberal blather of these are poor oppressed people…they are peaceful people.

            I’m talking about what we have already done! I’m talking about the parents who sit in the wings and will benefit from all of this! I am talking about the next hoard that will follow after this round is completed! You don’t say anything. I guess you see America as an open door policy, nevermind our law, which is pretty much in line with most, certainly not as stringent as Mexico’s!!!

        • kar666

          The borders crossed me. Please remember that most “illegal aliens” are latino which means they have native blood. We belong to this side of earth and we are free to makes where we choose to. I believe in a world free of borders!

      • amuncat

        Your biggest surprise is going to be that you will probably be doing the same sh****y jobs you have always done because there are none beyond service jobs! Think you are going to get that job using that degree? Think again! Ask ANY recent college grad!

    I hope you understand that the agents are disobeying their orders, or their bosses are telling them to continue the BS just to undermine Obama.

    It is why they are suing the admin right now about his policy.

    Pay attention and connect the dots.
